I looked in the mirror and smiled
Fascinated by my Taqiyah and thobe
But I dare not stand tall and proud in this world
The fear of the unknown
Eating up the plaster saints
They ask if I feel hot underneath my garment
But then I sarkily ask
Shall I ignore my identity to please you?
They think under my robes
I hide my weapons and wickedness
Pray thee, I whisper and tell
My robes tell my story of peace and unity
My identity, my sense of belonging
When you look at me
Do not despise me
Because there's nothing underneath my robes
Except for the fear of being called an arsonist
I do have a warm heart of unity and peace
And to top it up, I am a human
As-salam alaikum
